Antigua, Guatemala
Jan 1, 2006
We slept in a little this morning and then ate our final breakfast at the Posada - delicious blue corn pancakes, eggs and fruit. Mario had showed David, the owner, some of our pictures the night before and David decided he wanted to buy 2 of the pictures of the hotel. We told him to name his price (since we didn't really care too much) and he gave us 200 Quetzals (roughly $27) off of our final bill.
After check-out, we took a little Tuk-Tuk to the boat dock and then waited in the boat til the driver could round up enough people for it to be worthwhile for him to drive across the lake to Panajachel. After waiting about 30 min with 8 people in the boat, 2 more people finally came and got in and we headed out. We got to Panajachel about 30 minutes before our shuttle was scheduled to pick us up and so we had to just wait outside with our packs on. When the shuttle arrived, he took us to the tour office where we had to get on a new shuttle that was mostly filled. Because every seat ended up being taken, everyone had to put their luggage on the roof - we were nervous about that since it was the first time we've done it, but it all worked out OK.
By the time we arrived back in Antigua it was 3pm. We walked to the main tourist area near the arch and found a room at the first hotel we went into, the Hotel Posada de Don Rodrigo ($50) which is a cute hotel with a nice garden area and live music to greet us. We made plans to have a shuttle to the airport pick us up at 4am tomorrow, since our flight to Tikal leaves at 6:30am!! After that, we walked around town and saw a couple of the ruins that we missed last time we were here. The San Jeronimo church and ruins was unfortunately closed due to the holiday, so we didnt get to see them. We did see El Carmen, a church that is in ruins but has a beautiful facade. We also walked over to see the Casa Santo Domingo, an old Dominican church and monastery that is in ruins ($5pp). The grounds have a beautiful fountain, tombs, cemetery, and several museums with artifacts some dating back to 800 BC. We had a nice dinner at El Arco hotel and restaurant and then headed back to our hotel to try to catch an early night sleep before our 3:30am wakeup.
