Santiago de Atitlan, Guatemala
Dec 29 - Day 3

We got to sleep in a little bit this morning (8:30). We had a delicious breakfast at our hotel: eggs with tomato and onions, beans, avocado, plantains, and tortillas with fresh squeezed orange juice! After that, we decided to walk through the town to the boat docks. We thought we knew the way, but ended up getting a little bit lost on the way and passed through some streets that we would rather not be on. All turned out OK when we found the main street again and passed by all of the vendors selling paintings, wood carvings, clothing, and more.

We had to take the large ferry from our town to the town of San Pedro which took about 45 minutes - very slow going. We were the only non-locals on the boat. After you arrive in San Pedro, to catch a smaller boat to San Marcos, you have to walk about 15 minutes through the town to get to the other boat dock. Luckily, there were 2 people in front of us who looked like they might be going there and we followed them all the way as we wound through small streets. San Pedro seemed to be more of a backpackers type of town with many more hotels and restaurants with signs in English.

We hopped on the small boat to San Marcos just in time and when we got there, we were greeted by a little boy who wanted to show us around for $1. We took him up on the offer but he only brought us to one store and then said it was an hour walk to the center of town. We only had 1 1/2 hours, since the last boat back departs at 1:30pm, so we said no and he went off to find more tourists. After that we wandered around the dirt paths that ran between many hotels, restaurants and houses. We were a little hesitant to do this at first, but after seeing many more non-locals walking the paths, we decided it was OK. We walked along a little of the path along a cliff that leads to the next town, then stopped for a quick lunch before getting back on the boat to San Pedro and then the larger ferry back to Santiago. It seems like there are a lot of hippies/artists from the US and Europe that live in these small towns and try to get by as they travel around. We took a little 3 wheeled "taxi" back to our hotel from the boat docks for a little over $1. Definitely worth it for what would be the 15-20 min walk up hill (we had learned from the previous day :)).

We spent some time sitting outside at our hotel and Mario got the little black cat to sit on his lap for a nap (see gallery).
