Business men dressed in suits in downtown TokyoToday was a full day of travel, as we couldn't get a direct flight from Beijing to Tokyo.  We had a very early 6am shuttle bus from the Capitol Hotel to the airport.  Good thing we had decided to check out last night as to avoid any confusion in the early morning.  The shuttle bus was packed with people, but waiting for us right on time at 6am for the short trip to the Beijing airport.  We crowded into the standing room on the bus, but luckily we were there in less than 5 minutes.  We checked into our Cathay Pacific flights and had a half hour to spare.  We grabbed a small breakfast in the airport lounge and then made our way to the gate.

Our flight was a short 2 1/2 hours.  Today is a day of eating - we had another breakfast on the plane, soon to be followed by a noodle lunch in the Hong Kong airport lounge!  The Hong Kong Cathay Pacific lounge has a "noodle bar" where you can order one of 5 different noodle dishes anytime throughout the day.  We had some spicy peanut sauce noodles to top off our time in China.  We used the free high speed wireless connection to call Tommy (my brother) for his 27th birthday, but he didn't pick up :(  All four of us sung Happy Birthday to him on the answering machine instead :)

Mario and I worked on getting our Russian visa applications in order, as we will want to turn them in at the embassy in Tokyo tomorrow.  After some reasearch, we think we have all the necessary paperwork done - the Russians don't make it easy for visitors!  We had a few rounds of drinks and read about Japan from our Lonely Planet guidebook.

Another Cathay Pacific flight - this time close to 4 hours long - to Tokyo.  We landed right on time at 8:20pm and then brought our rail passes to the ticket counter to write a start date of tomorrow on them.  We only have 7 days validity on our Japan Rail Passes, so we didn't want to get them started until tomorrow.   There is a free shuttle from the airport to the Hilton Narita (airport hotel - $75), where we will spend the night before making our way into Tokyo tomorrow morning.
