Welcome to Blue Ocean Studios
Around the World

Our cabana at the Charco Verde InnIt was nice to just relax a little bit today and we had a nice location for it right on the beach of Charco Verde.  We slept in a little bit this morning, as the howler monkeys and other various insects/birds seemed to be quite active and kept us awake in the early morning hours.

Another breakfast of eggs, beans, rice, cheese and white bread - this seems to be the staple around here in all different varieties but really the same thing.  We spent some time catching up on our photo editing and web pages, although we don't have an internet connection here on the island.

Around 2pm we decided to check out the small nature trail that started out near our cabin.  We had heard that it was pretty good and it didn't disappoint.  It started out along the beach and then came upon a small lagoon where we had to cross over the water on a small man made bridge of logs that had been cut in half and nailed together, after that we walked up the path and began to hear things moving in the trees.

Howler monkey papa in the treeWe looked up and there was a whole family of howler monkeys looking down at us - there had to be about 2 small babies and another 2-3 bigger siblings with the mother.  We took the camera out and they seemed as fascinated about us as we were with them!  After a minute, there was a loud rustling in the trees and we were nervous about what was coming for us.  After about 30 seconds of noise, the father monkey appeared and came up into the same tree to protect his family (fhew - it wasn't a larger animal! :)).   The path finally led us to a very windy viewpoint where we could have a great view of both the Volcan Maderas and Concepcion.

We hiked back to our cabin and decided to take advantage of the late afternoon sun and catch a few rays.  We broke out our small towels from REI and got on our bathing suits, which all ended up not really being worth it given the hour of the day and the many bugs that annoyed us on the beach. We enjoyed the evening sunset over the lake from our porch swing and then met up with Sarah and Darien, the Canadian couple we roomed with back at the Finca Magdalena - they were kind enough to share a bottle of rum - so we sat down with them outside their room and had a few rum and cokes.

Us on the Charco Verde beach at sunset, our last night on Isla OmetepeWe all decided to try to walk over to the next hotel to eat dinner (our friends had told us it was only about 100 meters down the beach).  By this time it was dark, so we took out our flashlight and started out along the shoreline. After about 10 minutes of walking through random fields and on the beach, we decided this was probably not the smartest idea no matter how safe we all felt Nicaragua was. We turned around and when we got back, asked our hotel how far the next place was and he said 15 min down the beach, which means we were almost all the way there, but all of us agreed it was not worth it to try to go back, so we ended up eating at our hotel again.  I'm not saying our hotel food was bad, I guess we were just looking for something new.

We made plans with a local unofficial taxi driver to pick us up at the hotel and bring us to the ferry tomorrow in time for the 9am ferry back to the mainland. After that we are either going to end up in Granada or Managua for the night depending on how we feel and how far we want to travel.
